Yu et al – Accidental ingestions in peanut allergic children
In the August 2006 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Yu et al aim to determine the current frequency of accidental exposures occurring in peanut allergic children in Quebec and to identify factors associated with exposure. Accidental exposure to peanut has been reported to occur frequently and has been difficult to avoid because of its widespread use, manufacturing and labeling errors, utensil contamination, and label mis-interpretation. The authors had parents of peanut-allergic children complete questionnaires about accidental exposure to peanut occurring over the preceding year and found that accidental exposure to peanut occurs at lower frequency than previously reported; however, they found that most reactions are managed inappropriately. These findings suggest that enhanced awareness, access to safer environments, and good food manufacturing practices may have contributed to a lower incidence of inadvertent peanut exposure, but further reduction and better education on allergy management is still needed.
